Positive Birth Stories

Reading positive birth stories when you’re pregnant is both reassuring and inspiring. Not every birth goes as expected, but however you birth your baby, the important thing is just that! You can use active birth techniques in every birth, from a home birth in the bath, to an elective c-section, making every experience empowering and positive. I hope you enjoy reading these very different birth stories from an amazing group of strong women, doing what they were born to do.

My first baby 20 months ago was a c section after reduced foetal movement. I had no idea whether or not I could question or engage in any of it, and although the caesarean was a pleasant experience, I went a long time without many of the things I wanted - skin to skin etc.

For my second baby I found a really supportive VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) group, and my midwife and the hospital team all worked hard with me to...

I woke at 5.30 and noticed dull cramping in my lower abdomen, like the start of a period. I'd been having feelings like this for a few days but instinctively knew these were different, far more rhythmic than what I'd had before. I downloaded a 'contraction app' and they were about 5mins apart and 1min long, apparently I should have gone to the hospital then! I knew we weren't ready.

The contractions continued all day so we sta...

‘If this little one decides to stay with us it’s going to be a boy’.

I felt a strong connection to him from the very start. I meditated with him almost daily and decided to ask him when he was going to arrive. I always thought he’d come earlier than term, so when I got the answer of 8 I took it to mean 38 wks, June 28 or July 8. As each of those markers passed I began to feel a sadness set in. At 39 wks I felt like my ‘birthing...

The day we found out we were pregnant was (as it is for so many people) overwhelming, nerve-wracking but mostly after over a year of trying to conceive, exciting.

I was due to go to the doctors that day for further tests as to why I was not having any monthly cycles for a year and a half after stopping the contraceptive pill.
I was thrilled to walk in and tell the doctor my good news!

Then the nerves followed.....
What if I...

In July 2017 I was expecting my first baby! I was very lucky and had a lovely smooth pregnancy. I took an active birthing class, read some books and got a hypnobirthing cd to listen to at bed time. It all clicked straight away, lying flat on your back to push out a baby now seemed the silliest thing!... so I stayed calm, active and purposely ignored all of the negative horror stories people always insist on telling first time...

Week 30 panic hit me and I wasn’t sure I wanted a baby anymore! I definitely didn’t want the labour! I chose to try an active birth class and I’m sooo glad I did. It completely flipped my mindset from terrified to empowered!
So after a morning of Boxing Day sales shopping I had an edge of crankiness not unusual for my 2 day overdue self. I wasn’t really expecting to have a baby in my arms in 6 hours.
Boxing Day.....my husbands...
